Does Any of This Sound Familiar?

Wisdom teeth often arrive quietly, then start causing trouble you can no longer ignore. We hear from patients every week who put off addressing the discomfort, hoping it would settle on its own. The good news is relief is closer than you think.
  • Pain when chewing or opening your jaw
  • Anxious about hidden dental problems
  • Throbbing pain that comes and goes
  • Avoiding meals you used to love
  • Swelling, infections, or gum tenderness
  • Trouble sleeping through jaw pain
  • If any of this hits close to home, you're not alone. A simple consultation can show you exactly what's going on and what comes next.

    What Happens When You Wait

  • Pressure Keeps Building

Impacted wisdom teeth push against neighboring teeth, creating ongoing pressure that worsens with time.

  • Treatment Becomes More Involved

Roots develop further with age, making extraction more complex than earlier intervention would be.

  • Discomfort Disrupts Daily Life

Eating, sleeping, and focusing become harder when nagging pain follows you throughout your day.

  • Infection Risk Grows Higher

Partially erupted wisdom teeth trap bacteria and food, increasing risk of painful gum infections.

  • Nearby Teeth Get Damaged

Crowding from impacted wisdom teeth can shift, crack, or wear down healthy teeth around them.

  • Fewer Comfortable Options

Acting early lets you choose your timing instead of facing an urgent removal during a flare-up.

  • Acting now means a simpler procedure, faster healing, and lasting relief.

Understanding Wisdom Teeth Removal: A Quick Overview

Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the very back of your mouth, usually appearing in your late teens or early twenties. Because there’s often little room for them, they can grow sideways, stay trapped under the gums (a condition called impaction), or push against neighboring teeth. Wisdom teeth removal is a routine oral surgery procedure that lifts these teeth out of the jaw safely, protecting the rest of your smile from damage.

At Countryman Dentistry, we use 3D imaging and detailed planning to map out each tooth’s position before treatment begins. Patients seeking wisdom teeth removal in Plano benefit from our on-site lab, advanced sedation options, and a team that treats every case with the same care we would want for our own family.

  • Most wisdom teeth emerge between ages 17 and 25
  • Procedure typically completed in a single appointment

Is Wisdom Teeth Removal Right for You?

One of the most common questions we hear is whether removal is really necessary. Many adults qualify for this procedure, including those whose wisdom teeth haven’t fully erupted yet. Even if you’ve never had pain, your X-rays may reveal a future problem worth addressing now.
  • Have wisdom teeth that haven't fully come through your gums
  • Currently dealing with pain, swelling, or pressure in your back jaw
  • Want to prevent future crowding or shifting of your other teeth
  • Have been told by another dentist that removal may be needed
  • Are entering your late teens or twenties and planning ahead
  • Not Sure If You Qualify?

It’s completely normal to wonder where you stand. A wisdom teeth removal consultation gives you a clear answer with a personalized recommendation based on imaging and a careful exam.

What to Expect During Wisdom Teeth Removal

Patients often tell us the procedure was far easier than they imagined. Every step is designed around your comfort, from gentle communication to sedation options that let you relax completely.
    1

    Consultation & Imaging

Your first visit focuses on understanding what's happening beneath the surface. We use 3D imaging and digital X-rays to see the exact position, shape, and depth of each wisdom tooth. Together, we'll review the findings, talk through your options, and answer every question so you walk away with a clear plan and complete confidence.

    2

    Personalized Preparation

Before your appointment, we'll walk through everything you can expect, including how to prepare, what to wear, and which sedation level fits you best. From minimal calming options to deeper sedation, you'll choose what makes you feel most at ease. We'll also confirm aftercare details so you're never wondering what comes next.

    3

    The Day of Your Procedure

On treatment day, you'll settle into a comfortable chair while sedation begins to work. Most patients describe the next portion as a gentle blur; you might doze off, listen to music through our headphones, or simply relax in the moment. Our skilled team works precisely and efficiently to remove each wisdom tooth with as little disturbance as possible.

    4

    Heading Home & Healing

Once your procedure wraps up, a loved one will drive you home with simple, clear aftercare instructions in hand. Most patients are surprised by how manageable the first day feels, especially with the comfort measures we recommend. We'll check in soon afterward to make sure healing is on track and answer anything that comes up.

    Ready to Feel Better Soon?

    Your Wisdom Teeth Removal Recovery

Most patients are surprised by how quickly the worst of it passes, often within the first two days. Healing takes a little time, but you’re never figuring it out alone.

    First 24-48 Hours

Expect mild swelling, light bleeding, and some discomfort during the first day or two. Cold compresses, rest, and soft foods like yogurt, smoothies, and applesauce make this stretch much easier. Most patients find prescribed pain relief handles any soreness well.

    First 1-2 Weeks

By the third or fourth day, you'll likely feel noticeably better and can ease back into your regular routine. Brushing carefully, rinsing with warm salt water, and avoiding straws or hard foods help your gums settle smoothly. Many patients return to work or school within a few days.

    Long-Term Healing

Full gum healing typically continues quietly over the following weeks. You may notice subtle changes as the area smooths out and feels completely normal again. Once recovery is complete, the relief from pressure, pain, or crowding becomes part of everyday life.

Every patient heals at their own pace, so your timeline may vary a little. We’ll send you home with personalized aftercare instructions and a direct line to our team for anything that comes up.

    Wisdom Teeth Removal FAQs

You’ve probably got a few questions, and we love that. Here are answers to the most common ones we hear from patients considering wisdom teeth removal in Plano. If anything else comes to mind, just ask.

    Does wisdom teeth removal hurt?

Thanks to modern sedation and gentle techniques, most patients feel little to nothing during the procedure itself. Afterward, you may have mild soreness, but it’s typically well-managed with simple pain relief, ice packs, and rest. Most people feel comfortable again within a few days.
Most wisdom teeth removals are completed within 45 to 90 minutes from start to finish. The exact time depends on how many teeth need to come out and whether any are impacted. We’ll give you a clear estimate at your consultation so you can plan accordingly.
We offer four levels of sedation, ranging from minimal (awake and relaxed) to general anesthesia (completely asleep). The right choice depends on your comfort, anxiety level, and the complexity of your case. We’ll talk it through together before treatment day.
Not always. Some adults keep their wisdom teeth without issue. However, when they’re impacted, crowding nearby teeth, or causing pain or infection, removal is usually the safest option. A consultation with imaging will give you a clear, personalized answer about your specific situation.
Most patients return to work or school within three to five days. The first two days bring the most swelling and tenderness, then improvement is steady from there. Full gum healing continues quietly over a few weeks, often without you noticing.
For the first day or two, stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, applesauce, and broth. Avoid straws, hot drinks, crunchy snacks, and anything that requires heavy chewing. Most patients ease back into regular meals within a week.
An impacted wisdom tooth is one that can’t fully break through the gums, usually because there isn’t enough space in the jaw. Sometimes it grows at an angle, sometimes it stays trapped under the gum. Either way, it often needs removal.
Late teens to early twenties is often considered the smoothest window because roots aren’t fully formed yet, which can simplify the procedure. That said, removal can be done successfully at any age. We’ll assess your specific situation and recommend the right timing.
Yes. If you choose moderate, deep, or general sedation, you’ll need a trusted adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first several hours. We’ll go over all driving and recovery details before your appointment so nothing catches you off guard.
Many PPO insurance plans cover at least part of wisdom teeth removal, especially when it’s medically necessary. We accept all PPO plans and can review your specific benefits before treatment. Payment options are available if you’d like to spread the cost over time.

Thank You! My old tooth had fallen apart Sunday evening and was scratching my tongue more raw every time I would swallow, eat and especially, talk! This was causing a huge amount of pain on my tongue and I could feel it getting worse! On Tuesday I called Countryman although they were not my current dentist, they were able to squeeze me in and fix the tooth that was broken and rubbing against my tongue, causing the pain. The fix was an immediate relief! Thanks again!
