Is Tooth Pain Taking Over Your Life?

Tooth pain has a way of taking over everything from meals to sleep. When the nerve inside your tooth becomes infected or inflamed, the discomfort rarely fades on its own. Recognizing what you’re feeling is the first step toward real relief.
  • Chewing only on one side of your mouth
  • Anxiety over when the pain returns
  • Throbbing pain that wakes you at night
  • Skipping meals out with loved ones
  • Infection spreading deeper inside
  • Hot and cold drinks become impossible
  • If any of this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Relief is closer than you might think, and saving your tooth is often possible.

    What Happens When You Wait?

  • Infection Spreads Deeper

What started in one tooth can move into surrounding bone, making treatment more involved.

  • Pain Often Intensifies

Mild sensitivity can turn into constant throbbing pain that disrupts sleep and daily life.

  • Treatment Becomes Harder

Advanced infections may require surgery or extraction instead of a straightforward procedure.

  • Costs Climb Higher

Saving the tooth becomes harder, and replacement options like implants cost significantly more long-term.

  • Tooth Loss Becomes

Likely Once damage is severe enough, extraction may be the only remaining option for your tooth.

  • Daily Life Suffers

Eating, sleeping, and even concentrating at work become harder as the issue progresses.

  • Acting sooner means simpler treatment and a much better chance of saving your tooth.

Understanding Root Canal Therapy and How It Saves Teeth

Root canal therapy is a treatment that saves a tooth when the soft tissue inside, called the pulp, becomes infected or inflamed. The pulp contains nerves and blood vessels running through the center of your tooth. When deep decay, repeated dental work, or a crack allows bacteria to reach this inner chamber, infection develops and often causes severe pain. The treatment clears out the infected tissue, cleans the inside of the tooth, and seals it to prevent further problems.

Patients seeking root canal therapy in Plano benefit from the advanced imaging and gentle techniques used at Countryman Dentistry. Digital diagnostics allow our team to plan each step with precision, locating canals accurately and protecting healthy tissue. Comfort-focused care is built into every visit, with sedation options available for those who feel anxious about treatment.

  • Treatment typically completed in one or two visits
  • Modern techniques make the procedure comfortable for most patients
  • Saves your natural tooth and avoids extraction
  • Benefits of Root Canal Therapy

Choosing root canal therapy is about more than relieving pain. The decision shapes how you eat, sleep, and engage with the people around you for years to come. Understanding what changes for you matters.
  • Eat the foods you love
  • End the daily tooth pain
  • Smile and laugh freely again
  • Natural tooth structure preserved

Is Root Canal Therapy Right for You?

Wondering if root canal therapy is the right choice for your situation? Many patients are relieved to learn the treatment works for a wide range of cases, even ones that seem complicated at first glance. The only way to know for certain is a personal evaluation.
  • Currently experiencing persistent tooth pain that won't go away
  • Have a tooth that's sensitive to hot and cold drinks
  • Want to save your natural tooth instead of having it extracted
  • Have been told you have deep decay reaching the nerve
  • Are dealing with swelling, tenderness, or pressure around one tooth
  • Not Sure If You Qualify?

Uncertainty is part of the process for most patients considering root canal therapy. A consultation gives you a clear picture of your tooth’s condition and helps you decide whether this treatment is the right path forward.

What to Expect During Your Root Canal

Many patients walk in expecting a difficult experience and tell us afterward they were surprised at how comfortable it felt. Every step is designed around your comfort, with care taken to make the entire visit feel calm and predictable.
    1

    Examination and Diagnosis

Your visit begins with a thorough examination and digital imaging to confirm root canal therapy is the right approach. We take time to walk you through what we find, answer your questions, and explain the plan. You leave this step knowing exactly what to expect and feeling confident about moving forward.

    2

    Comfort and Anesthesia

Before any treatment begins, we make sure the area is fully numb. For patients who feel anxious, sedation options are available to help you stay relaxed throughout the visit. You'll feel pressure but not pain, and our team checks in often to make sure you're comfortable from start to finish.

    3

    Cleaning the Tooth

With the area numb, we carefully open the tooth and remove the infected tissue inside. The interior is cleaned, shaped, and disinfected using fine instruments and modern techniques. Most patients are surprised at how calm and steady the experience feels, with regular check-ins to make sure everything stays comfortable.

    4

    Sealing and Restoration

Once cleaned, the tooth is sealed to prevent reinfection, and a temporary or permanent restoration is placed. In most cases, a crown is recommended later to protect the tooth long-term. You walk out with relief from pain and a tooth that's ready to function naturally again.

Ready to End Tooth Pain for Good?

What to Expect After Root Canal Therapy

Most patients are surprised by how smooth recovery from a root canal feels compared to what they expected. Some mild tenderness is normal, but our team is here to support you through every step of healing.

    First 24-48 Hours

You may feel mild tenderness or sensitivity around the treated tooth, which usually fades quickly. Sticking with soft foods and chewing on the opposite side helps the area settle. Most patients find over-the-counter pain relief is more than enough during this short window.

    First Week

Tenderness continues fading day by day, and you'll start to notice how much better the area feels compared to before treatment. Normal eating, brushing, and daily activities resume right away, with care taken around the treated tooth until your final restoration is in place.

Every patient heals a little differently based on the tooth treated and personal factors. We provide a personalized aftercare plan with clear instructions, and our team is reachable whenever you have a question during recovery.

    Root Canal Therapy FAQs

Most patients have questions before treatment, and asking is always welcome. Here are some of the most common topics our patients bring up. If something on your mind isn’t covered, our team is happy to walk you through it.

    Does a root canal hurt?

Modern root canal treatment is far more comfortable than its reputation suggests. With effective anesthesia, most patients feel pressure but no pain during the procedure itself. Many describe the experience as similar to having a routine filling placed, and sedation is available for added peace of mind.
Most root canals take between 60 and 90 minutes per tooth, depending on how many canals the tooth has and how complex the case is. Some cases are completed in a single visit, while others may need a follow-up appointment for sealing and final restoration.
In most cases, yes. A crown protects the treated tooth from cracking and restores normal chewing strength. Front teeth sometimes don’t need a full crown right away, while back teeth almost always do because of the chewing pressure they handle daily.
Treated teeth often last for decades and sometimes a lifetime when properly cared for. Consistent brushing, flossing, and regular checkups help the tooth stay healthy. Once the crown is in place, the tooth functions like any of your other natural teeth.
Without treatment, the infection inside the tooth continues to spread over time. Pain typically worsens, and damage can extend into surrounding bone. Eventually, the tooth may need to be extracted, requiring an implant, bridge, or denture to replace it down the road.
Saving your natural tooth is almost always the better long-term choice when possible. Natural teeth maintain jawbone structure and chewing function in ways replacement options can’t fully match. Extraction is reserved for cases where the tooth simply can’t be saved.
Wait until any numbness fully wears off before eating, usually within a few hours. Sticking with soft foods for the first day or two helps the area settle. Avoiding chewing directly on the treated tooth until the final restoration is in place is also recommended.
Failure is rare, but it can happen if bacteria reach the tooth again through a cracked filling or new decay. In those cases, retreatment is often possible and successful. Regular dental visits help catch and address any concerns early before they become bigger issues.
Yes, sedation options are available for patients who feel anxious about treatment. From mild relaxation to deeper sedation, we discuss what works best for your comfort level. Many patients who once dreaded dental work say sedation transformed their experience completely.
Common signs include persistent tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers, swelling near a specific tooth, or pain when chewing. A dental exam with imaging confirms whether the pulp is affected. Catching it early often means a simpler treatment overall.

Thank You! My old tooth had fallen apart Sunday evening and was scratching my tongue more raw every time I would swallow, eat and especially, talk! This was causing a huge amount of pain on my tongue and I could feel it getting worse! On Tuesday I called Countryman although they were not my current dentist, they were able to squeeze me in and fix the tooth that was broken and rubbing against my tongue, causing the pain. The fix was an immediate relief! Thanks again!
